Can i just remind everyone that the service for the end of Op Banner is being held next Wednesday 10th September at 1100 hrs at St Paul's Cathedral i hope we all stop for a moment and remember not just The Regiments fallen but all who have not returned from their tours. None of us could have thought that it would have continued for so long a thought keeps coming into my head that when i left the Army in 1980 the younger soldiers who served in the last 7 years hadn't even be born. So hold your heads up lads stick out your chests and be proud we did a good job.

Yesterday I recieved a messag from a Lisa Keel through Friends Reunited trying to find info on her father who died when she was only 4 years old.
His name was Gordon Foster, who she thinks was Signals and served with the Green Howards in the early 70's, if anybody knew him, and has any stories about him(funny or not) especially if there are any photo,s of him please let me know and I will pass the info on to her. I am sure that we can help her if we can.
Many Thanks

alan conn Wednesday, 3 September 2008 14:06
Reference the above it is her Uncle not her father. Slight mix up.

Brian "Eddie" Edmunds Monday, 8 September 2008 14:26
Hi Alan, with regard to Gordon Foster who I served with in the Sigs Pl. Look at the photos donated by Brian (Cushy) Butterfield, Photo No 3. Gordon is 3rd from the left (kneeling) next to Mike Bradley. I remember Gordon as being a good man, although, I have to admit, like us all, he could be infurating when the mood took him. Even so, he died an awful death, one I wouldn't wish on anyone.

i have just finished reading the long long war and it realy does make very good reading, regurdless of which cap badge you wore it proves that in the early years how ill prepared we were for what was to come, and i supose that is in a lot of cases still happening today, what it needs is less expencess for the polititions and more spent equiping our lads so they can be prepared in the future.all the best to all XIX

eddie atkinson Tuesday, 2 September 2008 10:56
well said Jimmy and my agreeing with you is a big step forward. As usual the op was ill thought out and ill prepared the taining was as much use as a chocolate tea pot especially in the early years. But as usual we did a good job and adapted very quickly unfortunatley for some who didn't make it back not quick enough but that isn't unusual we have always sent young men to fight without the proper training, rushed through we all know you can never totally prepare soldiers and some are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still proud to have been a part of it though.

Brian "Eddie" Edmunds Tuesday, 2 September 2008 15:53
Hi Jimmy and Eddie, hope you don't mind, but I couldn't help but agree with your sentiments with regard to Tom Whartons book which I am reading a present. Ill prepared hardly covers it lads when you think back to how we were thrown in at the deep end. No wonder we were known as the "Raggy Lads". As you say Eddie, adapting fast was vital in order to survive out there. I sometimes think that it's a miracle we didn't lose more than we did, and THEY were too many! Like you, I was proud, and still am to have been a part of it. Once a Green Howard always a Green Howard!

jimmy foster Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:04
its nice to see we are in harmony about important things,i dont like getting political but maggie was the only person to give us a decent payrise and now richard dannet does stand his corner for the lads we need more like him to stand up and be counted, all the best jimmy.ps i would never say i was a big mac more of a desert

Mick Roberts Wednesday, 3 September 2008 23:32
What more did you want Jimmy? A sleeping bag, a Flak Vest (shared between 2)being in the best platoon in the battalion & a cushy number at Flax St., Mill. 1970 was a doddle and you never stopped laughing! I would like to know who told the author the Howards were there in '69 (see the photo with Graham Crossland in).

jimmy foster Thursday, 4 September 2008 08:13
nice to see another great anti-tank gunner on the net,how are you keeping mick in good health i hope,i dident put that one of graham in so i dont know were it came from, yes we did have some good laughs but i suppose that keeped us sane,i see you and steve cammish manage to get one in of farrindon gardens burning.all the best jimmy

Come on out there all you golfers. Never thought that I would have to say that any Green Howard was shy at coming forward. We are still waiting for entries.
I will be going on Holiday on Sunday 7th Sept. Returning on Sunday 14th so if you are intending to come and have not yet sent your form don't worry no one will be denied entry.
