MR CHARLES HILL – AWARDED THE LEGION D’HONNEUR Charlie Hill was born in Sheffield on 9 May 1925; Charles Hill is a D Day veteran. At the age of 19, at 0730 hours on 6th June 1944 he landed with the 6th Battalion Green Howards on Gold Beach at Vers-sur-mer. He fought alongside WO2 Stanley Hollis VC at the Mont Fleury battery and later that day at Crépon. Further on in the Normandy campaign he received a minor head wound which caused him to be evacuated to England. Returning

Michael Igo was born in Middlesbrough in 1947 and enlisted in 1963. After training at Strensall he joined 5 Platoon B Company in Libya. Later he moved to Mortar Platoon and served in Colchester, Hong Kong, Malaya, Norway, Canada, Belize, San Salvador, Germany, and Northern Ireland. Anthony Gaynor was born in 1945 in Essex and enlisted at the age of 18. After training at RMA Sandhurst he was commissioned in 1965, and joined the 1st Battalion in Hong Kong, moving to Malaysia. Later he served in Colchester and Minden, including the first Belfast tour. In 1970 he returned to Hong Kong to attend a long Chinese language course, after which he worked at a government listening station. John Powell was born in London in 1946 and is the son of a former Green Howard. He lived in Cyprus with his family during the 2nd Battalion’s posting on the island in 1954. He enlisted at the age of 18. Commissioned from RMA Sandhurst, he joined the 1st Battalion, commanding 10 Platoon C Company in Colchester and British Honduras. The Stanley Hollis VC Memorial on Thu 26 Nov
Stanley Hollis VC (21 September 1912 – 8 February 1972), the only Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day, was born in Middlesbrough in 1912. Remembrance Sunday: Middlesbrough 2015
Poignant tributes to those who lost their lives at Middlesbrough service. Hundreds of people mourned for those who lost their lives in war at a special Middlesbrough service for Remembrance Sunday. Veterans, young army cadets and politicians were among those to pay their respects at the Cenotaph in Linthorpe Road.
