Captain Dennis APPLEYARD

Dennis Appleyard enlisted in 1965 as a Junior Soldier at JTR Troon.  He left the Army nearly 30 years later as Captain.  In the intervening years he followed a clerical career which saw him progress from B Company clerk, through other companies and departments, the echelons of the Orderly Room, Chief Clerk of 1st Bn Yorkshire Volunteers, before culminating in the appointment of Chief Clerk 1 Green Howards in March 1972 where he reigned for 14 years. He then moved to York, first as Chief Clerk at the Depot Strensall; and later as WO1 Staff Assistant in HQ Kings Division.  During his career he also served in Germany, Canada, British Honduras and Kenya.

In 1991 Dennis was selected for a Commission and returned to 1 Green Howards. But in 1994, he was a casualty of the ‘Options for Change’ Redundancy programme.  However, this was to the benefit of the Regiment and the Green Howards Association when he became the RHQ office manager and Secretary of the GHA where he remained until this time last year, his last big occasion, so many of which he organised.
