Les Sampher enlisted in 1964 and passed out of training as Joint Best Recruit. He joined B Company in Tripoli, later moving to the Signal platoon in which he served for several years, as well as the Recce platoon, going to Canada and Belize, and later Germany. Les was posted to the Army Youth Team in 1970, rapidly gaining several climbing qualifications. Although invited to join an Army Everest expedition, Les decided to leave after 9 years’ service. He became a sales manager for a UK/Dutch construction company and was self-employed. Today, he runs a property company providing holiday cottages.

Les, who is a member of the Friends, has participated in many sports but has no memory of his 21st birthday.
