Major Raymond Taylor

Ray Taylor comes from a Green Howard family. His father served for 27 years and his younger brother Tony for 24. Ray himself enlisted as a Junior Soldier in the Royal Engineers in 1956, 59 years ago, spending three years at the Army Apprentice College Harrogate. After further training and a JNCO cadre with the Sappers, he transferred to 1 Green Howards, then stationed in Iserlohn, as a company clerk. He was posted to the Depot where he was clerk to Captain Peter Inge. Ray continued to advance through the ranks of the Orderly Room over nine years, posted for many years to 1 KINGS and 5/8 KINGS, and finally 3 CHESHIRE as a Permanent Staff Administrative Officer with whom he was promoted Major. During his service he also served in Germany, Cyprus, Colchester, Malaya and Hong Kong.

Ray remembers being invited to the Green Howards Sergeants Mess in Minden one night, when his KINGS collar dogs were torn of his Mess Dress by the late Tot Turner and Jack Hayhurst – an expensive evening. Ray Taylor was President of the Cheshire Branch of our Association for seven years from 1995 to 2002 and is a member of the Friends. We welcome him back to the Green Howard family.
