John Lynch, ‘Slim’, joined the Green Howards fifty years ago. After training at Strensall he joined 1st Battalion in Tripoli, later moving to Benghazi. He moved Colchester and onwards to Malaysia. He also served in British Honduras, Germany, twice in Northern Ireland and Canada, with A and then C Company. In ‘slimmer’ days, he was the Ist Armoured Division orienteering champion. Leaving the Army in 1972 as Corporal after 7 years’ service, John then worked on the oil rigs and was a storeman for 25 years. ‘Slim’ Lynch is a regular member of Thornaby branch, twice serving as Branch Secretary and has attended 35 Reunions.
