John Powell was born in London in 1946 and is the son of a former Green Howard. He lived in Cyprus with his family during the 2nd Battalion’s posting on the island in 1954. He enlisted at the age of 18. Commissioned from RMA Sandhurst, he joined the 1st Battalion, commanding 10 Platoon C Company in Colchester and British Honduras. After university, he was Intelligence Officer and Adjutant; he served in the MOD working for the General Staff and in the Directorate of Military Operations. He was Chief Instructor at Sandhurst and worked in the Washington embassy. He commanded C Company in Cyprus, in Catterick and in Osnabruck. From 1987 to 1989 he commanded 1st Battalion in Londonderry and Catterick, including the Tercentenary celebrations.

Promoted Colonel, he served at HQ UK Land Forces and was later Chief of Staff of the UN force in Cyprus. His final job in the Army, as Brigadier, was commanding 43 Brigade in Exeter. On retiring, John Powell moved to the TA, for nine years running the Reserve Forces and Cadets in South East District..

Brigadier John served on the Regimental Council and Board for over twenty years. He was Deputy Colonel and was the last Colonel of the Regiment. He and his wife Jill have been loyal supporters of Green Howards events up and down the country, at home and abroad, notably in France.
