A Message From Colonel Clive Mantell
The funeral of the late Charlie Hill took place on Friday 23rd September in Sheffield. As readers of The Green Howard magazine will have seen in the recent edition which has come through the letter box, Charlie featured prominently. First, on Green Howard Sunday he received the Légion d’honneur and then in Crépon where he led the march past.
His funeral was very well attended, supported by Green Howards, Major Pat Ralph MM and soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment, Normandy Veterans Association (Sheffield Branch), Arnhem veterans and Parachute Regiment association, relevant standard bearers organised by the Royal British Legion, as well as many other ex-servicemen. The main, hear-warming eulogy was given by the priest, with the President of Sheffield Branch NVA, Chairman of the Freedom Flame Association and Chairman GHA also contributing.
An ex-Black Watch piper led the procession to the graveside, which was appropriate as Charlie had been transferred to the Gordon Highlanders when he returned to the European war after recuperation in England. Last Post and Reveille were also sounded.
Afterwards, Charlie’s grandson Andrew told me how much the family appreciated all the support.
There are great photos of his funeral on the Sheffield Star website.
Finally, I would like to thank all those Green Howards, from the Sheffield Gathering and elsewhere, who were able to be there, for supporting this dignified occasion.
