Strictly Poppies' Great War Centenary

June 25, 2018

Dear Sirs, '

Strictly Poppies' Great War Centenary event and veterans’ parade I am writing to cordially invite you and your members to attend an event entitled Strictly Poppies in Haywards Heath, West Sussex on Sunday, 15th July 2018. It will inaugurate a range of centenary events marking the end of the Great War including the construction by volunteers of fifty thousand specially made poppies that will be planted around the town’s war memorial this Autumn in an echo of the 2014 River of Poppies display at the Tower of London. Taking place at the town’s Orchards shopping centre, 10 St Wilfrids Way RH16 3QH, the day’s entertainments will include brass bands, jazz, singing, dancing, drama, Punch & Judy, magic, games, stalls and refreshments, and acts of Remembrance to the fallen (poster enclosed). As a further incentive, a beer voucher redeemable at the “NAAFI” tent erected for the purpose in the Orchards, will be awarded to each veteran participating in the parade. The event will formally open with a parade of ex-service veterans and cadets along the town’s main street, South Road, led by the 70-strong, award winning Burgess Hill Marching Youth. All your members and association standards in particular are most welcome to participate. Some may recall our very successful 2014 parade granting the Freedom of Mid-Sussex to the Royal Yeomanry, when 82 veterans paraded. Cold bottled water will be provided for you at no charge on the day. Forming up: Please assemble at the bottom of the St. Wilfrid’s Way service road running between the Orchards shopping centre and South Road at 10:10am, with the parade stepping off at 10:30am. Parking: ample free parking is available in the town centre – map enclosed to help you. The Orchards is only a fifteen minute walk from the railway station – directly on the London Victoria to Brighton line. If you are able to join us for this highly enjoyable and friendly get-together, and all in a good cause, please let me know by email or telephone. Should you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We greatly look forward to seeing you there.

Yours faithfully ,

Daniel Kington
